Female Coach Development Group 2023-24

Providing female coaches with the opportunity to connect with other female coaches in the area and learn and develop in a supportive environment.

The aim of Female Coach Development Group, a partnership with The FA and Westmorland FA, is to provide female coaches with the opportunity to connect with other female coaches in the area and learn and develop in a supportive environment.

The Group welcomes established, as well as new or potential coaches across the county, to join the group whether you’re currently volunteering in grassroots football (girls or mixed football) or are keen to step over the side-lines and get involved!

The free group will run coach development events throughout the season, which will be a mixture of online and face to face delivery.

The first Female Coach Development Group session of the season took place in Penrith, with coaches from across the county attending.

The session focussed on ‘Environment Creation and Management’ with The FA’s Chris Welburn and FA Community Champion Georgia Smethurst delivering a practical session with players from Penrith AFC to bring some of the information to life.

stepping over the sidelines workshops

Ever thought to yourself, “I don’t know about football because I’ve never played”, or “I don’t watch football so I don’t know any rules”? Well in this workshop we will explore all of the skills, attributes and knowledge that YOU DO have that can be transferable to football, along with the reasons why children play football.

The Stepping over the Sidelines workshop is designed to offer mums, female guardians, helpers, assistants and young leaders (14+) the opportunity to have a first look at how you might be able to get involved in football.

The FA’s first Grassroots Female Coach Conference at St George’s Park was attended by coaches who joined the online launch of the Coaching Group in July!

The conference included Guest Speakers specialising in Neuroscience in Coaching as well as Fitness and Physical Performance development, followed by practical sessions delivered by England U16 & U17 Coaches and Forest Green’s Hannah Dingley.

Whitehaven AFC’s Gay Frankland commented: “I had the best day at St George's Park, loved every minute of it, it’s been so inspiring! It was really fantastic to feel supported by a whole community who understands where I am in my coaching journey.”

While Sharron Caton from Abbeytown JFC said: “What a fab day. Thank you for the opportunity, I came away inspired. Still absolutely buzzing!”

Cumberland FA’s Football Development Officer Helen Aitchison commented: “It was wonderful that we could offer our local coaches an opportunity to experience a fantastic day surrounded with female coaches from across the country. By developing the female coaching group locally, we’re aiming to bring women together on their coaching journeys to support and connect with like minded individuals and build a solid foundation moving forward. There will be more regional and national opportunities in the future and we’re really excited to see where it takes us.”
