The brand-new FA Coaching Pathway launched on 1st August earlier this year, and since the Cumberland FA has delivered the new course content to these 47 coaches from across the county, with the content designed to directly raise the standard of coaches working within the grassroots game, in addition to impacting the coaches’ own respective playing squads.

There have been three Level 1 courses run since the new Coaching Pathway was introduced, taking place in Whitehaven, Penrith and Carlisle. The Level 1 course also encompasses the FA Emergency Aid and Safeguarding Children qualification, with coaches experiencing both theoretical and practical elements of the course en-route to successful completion.

In new innovative areas of the Level 1 course, coaches also worked on designing coaching sessions tailored to their grassroots team around a specific relevant topic, with coaches then using technology to record their own sessions before posting to an online community, where other participants on the course could view the sessions and deliver feedback.

James Reid, Football Development Officer at the Cumberland FA and FA Tutor, said: “The new course content is excellent and a step in the right direction in raising standards of coaching within the grassroots game.

“All FA coaching courses are now underpinned by the key messages from the England DNA and it is excellent to see these key messages running through all of the courses. As a county, we are delighted to see so many coaches come through in the first three months of the season.”

One coach participating in the course run in Carlisle added: “The course has really made me think about my team and how important it is to understand what their needs are.”

Meanwhile, another coach taking part on the course in Penrith said: “It really challenged my thinking. Before I came on this course, I wasn’t looking forward to it and didn’t think there was a need to come on a course for a role in volunteer coaching. However, I have actually really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone.”
