The Cumberland Walking Football Fixture Programme Begins

The Cumberland Walking Football League began on a cold and blustery morning in Workington on Sunday 27 January 2019.

Cumberland FA recently confirmed the sponsor for the brand new Walking Football League for the next three years, with ‘The Cumberland’ coming on board to support the format of football across the county.

The league structure, which is a first for Cumberland, gives friendly and competitive playing opportunities for players aged 50+ across the County. With league fixtures, festivals and Cup competitions, there is a format to suit everyone! The age groups are 50+ and 60+ giving more players the opportunity to play in an environment that suits their needs!

Becky Towns, The Cumberland’s Community Co-ordinator, commented, “Every year we support a wide variety of activities that provide opportunities for people that will benefit their physical and mental wellbeing. “So we’re really proud to be supporting the Cumberland FA’s Walking Football League over the next three years, and looking forward to going along and getting involved in these sessions to see the positive impact it is having to people from within our local communities.”

The festival format on Sunday welcomed 6 teams, with players traveling from Carlisle, Penrith, Workington and Grange to play a number of friendly fixtures to kick off the Walking Football calendar.

Ray Sempill, Cumberland FA’s Football Development Officer commented “It was great to get the competition programme up and running. Well done to all the teams for braving the gales. Lots of good games played in a great spirit today. I’d like to express our thanks to Lakes College and The Galloping Horse for hosting us."

John Sander, a player from Carlisle United FITC team gave us his thoughts on Walking Football “I like it because it keeps me fit, we play twice a week for 2 hours at Carlisle and the camaraderie amongst the players is great. The social side of it also keeps you in touch with the local game.”
