Cumberland FA County Cup Final 2018-19

Having already secured the Cumberland FA Women’s League (Under 16) title and the Cumberland round of The FA Youth Futsal Cup, Carlisle City JFC U16 Girls came into the Final on a high and full of confidence. Last season’s Under 16 Girls County Cup runners up were keen to add this title to their impressive collection over the past few seasons.
City overcame Abbeytown JFC and Whitehaven AFC Blue to reach their fourth County Cup Final in five years.

Workington Reds Diamonds finished (joint) second behind City in the Cumberland FA Women’s League (Under 16) and reached the County Cup Final by beating Cockermouth JFC, Milnthorpe Girls and Carlisle City JFC U15 without conceding any goals.

The third team on the pitch was led by Referee Dan Howes with Assistant Referees Dan Curwen and Willow Warneford, and fourth Official Seamus Edwards.

Once the formalities of the Final were complete including the Respect handshake, Referee Dan Howes had his final words with the two captains before the coin toss.

GAME ON

Following kick off, Workington Reds Diamonds took an early lead following a long throw in to go 1-0 up. Maddie Nixon got the goal for the Reds.

The lead didn’t last long; with Naomi Brown putting the rebound into the back of the net after the initial shot was well saved by Reds keeper Millie Robertson. 1-1

Frankie Sewell soon put City ahead, running onto a ball over the Reds defence and beyond the diving Robertson. 2-1. Sewell put City 3-1 up shortly after, another through ball splitting the Reds defence to put some daylight between the two teams.

Georgia Earl almost made it 4 after running onto a ball over the top. Keeper Robertson rushed out of goal to close Earl down and it was eventually cleared by a retreating defender.

The half time whistle was blown just as the promised rain showers began.

HALFTIME: Carlisle City JFC U16 Blue 3 – 1 Workington Reds Diamonds

The second half began as the first half ended with the game end to end. A few minutes into the second half, Emily Ferguson made the most of a defensive mix up to seal the game for City. 4-1

Both teams continued to have chances with the vocal and supportive crowd cheering on the players with tackles and chances continuing for the next 30 minutes.

The Reds had a number of half chances to get back into the game but City also had some chances to add to their tally, with goalkeeper Robertson pulling off some fine saves.

The final whistle blew and it was Carlisle City JFC U16 Girls celebrating! With the League title, County Futsal title and now the County Cup, there is still one more trophy up for grabs with City now on for the Quadruple!

Commiserations to Workington Reds Diamonds who played their part in an entertaining game.
