More than 500 girls play in The FA Pokemon Youth Futsal Cup

The first weekend of January saw more than 500 girls play Futsal at the Sands Centre in Carlisle.

59 teams from across Cumberland competed in the county round of The FA Pokemon Youth Futsal Cup in 4 age groups.

Since 2012 both the Carlisle Glass Longhorn Youth League and West Cumbria Youth League have offered Futsal opportunities throughout the winter to allow girls to play indoors whilst improving their skills in the fast paced small sided game. The competition, now in its 9th year is well attended showing the level of support and for the small sided game amongst coaches and players.

The Under 10 age group was first up, with the semi-finalists determined by the teams coming top of their group. Unisun Athletic JFC overcame Allerdale Panthers to set up a final with Whitehaven AFC who defeated Workington Reds Diamonds in the other semi final. After a very close game, Whitehaven AFC eventually won, to become Champions!

Next up was the Under 14 competition with an all East and an all West semi-final. Northbank JFC 1970 beat Abbeytown JFC while Whitehaven AFC U14 won against their club-mates Whitehaven AFC U13. Northbank JFC 1970 were the eventual winners of another very close final!

The following day, the Under 12 competition – the largest of the 4 age groups took place. Stanwix JFC Hornets, Whitehaven AFC Blue, Abbeytown JFC and Allerdale Girls Puma’s reached the semi finals. The final was an all west affair, with Whitehaven AFC Blue and Allerdale Girls Puma’s coming through their semi finals. Whitehaven AFC Blue were victorious in the final defeating Allerdale Girls Puma’s.

The Under 16 competition was also well supported. After an afternoon of Futsal, Workington Reds Diamonds won their semi final against Whitehaven AFC while Abbeytown JFC overcame Stanwix JFC setting up a final between the top 2 teams (currently) in the Cumberland FA Under 16 Girls League. Workington Reds Diamonds came out on top in the Futsal winning 3-1 against Abbeytown JFC.

Paul Carrigan, Football Development Officer for Cumberland FA commented “The weekend was a great showpiece for girls futsal across the county. The quality of some of the play and goals were fantastic and the atmosphere throughout the weekend was really positive.
