The Cup Final began at a fast pace with both teams having some half chances. It was Unisun Athletic JFC who got the opening goal, with Niall Siddaway breaking down the right hand side and slotting it past the keeper after 9 minutes.

It took the West Cumbrians just two minutes to equalise with Daniel Whitehead the goal scorer.

Unisun Athletic JFC were forced to make a change when their goalkeeper was injured. Niall Siddaway then ran onto a ball over the top and chipped the keeper to put the Carlisle team 2-1 up going into half time.

Workington Wanderers AFC started the second half strongly, with 3 quick chances, but they couldn’t make the breakthrough. Jonathon Yates did put Wanderers level shortly after following a goal mouth scramble from a corner.

Workington thought they’d gone ahead but their third goal was disallowed for offside. Both teams then had chances to win it but the goalkeepers were equal to the task. The final whistle blew, and it was onto penalties.

Workington Wanderers AFC were victorious, winning 5-4 after the penalty shootout.

Commiserations to Unisun Athletic JFC who more than played their part in an entertaining game.

Ben Snowdon of Cumberland FA commented “We were delighted to be able to conclude the competition and we’d like to thank the teams for their support. Unfortunately, the Cup Final experience was not the same as previous seasons, but in these different times we have to make changes and follow the latest guidance. Again, thanks to the teams for helping with this in the build up to the Final, including the socially distanced team photos and the post-match presentations.”
