500 Grassroots Players to get involved in the Andrea Buggy Trophies, supported by Every Life Matters, Cumbria.

Following on from the initial plans for the Andrea Buggy Trophy, supported by Every Life Matters, Cumberland FA can now confirm the details.

Due to circumstances beyond the County FA’s control and the restrictions in place due to the ongoing challenges of Covid 19 in the Return to Football, the 5-team competition was unable to get off the ground.

now there will be 20 teams playing in 3 divisions across Cumberland in the Andrea Buggy Trophy, supported by Every Life Matters in the Cumberland County League. The new format began following the return to play.

Fred Conway, Chairman of Cumberland FA and the Cumberland County League commented We’re delighted to involve more teams in the Andrea Buggy Trophy while raising awareness of suicide prevention with the support of Every Life Matters, Cumbria. With 20 teams involved initially it means there will be more conversations regarding mental health and wellbeing reaching further across the grassroots community.” 

The Cumberland County League teams have been split in to the East Division, West Division 1 and West Division 2 with each mini-league competing for the Andrea Buggy Trophy, supported by Every Life Matters.

The Cumberland County League were keen to support the campaign as Andrea’s husband David has been a referee within the league for a number of years.

Each team involved in the Andrea Buggy Trophy, supported by Every Life Matters will be provided with details of the local organisation which provides awareness, support and training across the County.

The Cumberland County League competitions are the first in a series of events to remember Andrea whilst also raising awareness of suicide prevention.

For the 2021 season which kicks off soon, the Cumberland FA Women’s League will be known as The Andrea Buggy Women’s League. 

Fred Conway continues Football was so important to Andrea and her family.  She played for numerous Women’s teams including Windscale, Workington Reds Ladies and more recently had been involved with Allerdale Wildcats. We want to pay our respects and hopefully, in some small way, support her family and loved ones by honouring her memory, her life and her love of the game.” 

The Cumberland FA Women’s League which did not take place in 2020, is still open for entry from teams interested in taking part. The closing date for entry is Friday 16 April, interested teams can enter by completing the online form HERE. Once the closing date has passed, the start date will be confirmed.

At the moment there are 8 confirmed teams in the league, with all teams provided with details of Every Life Matters, Cumbria which provides awareness, support and training across the County. 

In memory of Andrea and to raise the awareness of suicide prevention, Cumberland FA are working alongside Clubs across the County with more events planned in the future.

Cumberland FA will be making a donation to Every Life Matters as well as donating a percentage of discipline income during these competitions.

Cumberland FA have been working in partnership with Every Life Matters – Cumbria who promote suicide safer communities and provide bereavement support across Cumbria.

Fred continues:As an organisation we are acutely aware that suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 and that women are roughly, three times more likely to attempt suicide.  Therefore, as a large percentage of our members may be impacted by this issue, we hope to raise awareness of the fact that talking about suicide can save lives and that’s its ok to reach out and to ask for and ultimately get help.”  

Approximately 500 Grassroots Players and Match Officials will get involved in the Andrea Buggy Trophies, supported by Every Life Matters, Cumbria.
