Female Football Experiences Fantastic Growth in Cumberland

Three new Turn Up & Play sessions results in 50+ women showing an interest in football.

More than 50 women aged 35+ across the county have shown an interest or taken part in one of the 3 BRAND-NEW Turn Up and Play events delivered by Cumberland FA over the past few months.

For the first time this year, women in Cumberland have the opportunity to play with and against other women aged 35 and over.

Any women aged 35 and over are invited to come along and play at the free events this summer, with any experience welcome. The events are played in a friendly atmosphere as we aim to increase the number of playing opportunities for this age group.

Three Turn Up and Play sessions have already taken place in Carlisle and Workington with another three events planned before the end of July.

Here’s some of the feedback:

“It was a fantastic afternoon and I really enjoyed it with real friendly ladies and a great atmosphere thank you very much xx”

“I absolutely loved every minute of it. Thanks for organising it. Already can't wait to sign up for another one. A fantastic bunch of ladies who made me feel really comfortable x”

As the word gets out about these sessions and women across the county come along and have a go, we’re looking to develop the programme further with the input of the women involved.

Helen Aitchison, Women & Girls Football Development Officer said “We have seen the popularity of girl’s football increase massively over the last 15 years across the county and we’re delighted to be able to offer these chances for women who might have missed out on these opportunities growing up to come and play – either for the first time or come back into the game. The sessions are about fun and making the players feel comfortable whilst having a good kickabout.”

CALLING ALL CLUBS

Following a number of successful Turn Up and Play events, as we move forward we want to encourage local Clubs to get involved to help make the programme sustainable with some kind of league provision in the future to fit the needs of women aged 35+.

With women aged 35 and over involved in all grassroots football clubs across Cumberland, we would like to know if there is any interest in some ‘club based events’ (with Cumberland FA support) so we’re asking Cumberland FA clubs to complete this short survey as we continue to support and develop playing opportunities for women at this age group.

Allerdale Wildcats will be supporting the current programme with a ‘Turn Up and Play event’ in July.

For more information or enquires, or if you would like to set up a local weekly ‘Just Play’ centre for women aged 35 and over, please contact Cumberland FA’s Football Development Officer, Helen Aitchison, on 01900 511800 or email Helen.Aitchison@CumberlandFA.com
