Cumberland FA Referee Courses - Summer 2024

Four Referee Courses planned for Summer 2024

Cumberland FA is pleased to be delivering a further four FA Referee Courses throughout August and September 2024.

A one-day Cockermouth course will be held at the CFA Office in August, before an Adult Only course for Ex-Players in Carlisle at Brunton Park. In September, two one-day Carlisle courses will take place at Gilford Park.

PLEASE NOTE: These CFA Referee Courses during the summer are now for referees based within Cumberland FA only, as they have been tailored to meet the needs of our partner leagues and have been subsidised accordingly. Newly qualified referees from these courses will be expected to referee within Cumberland as a direct result of the specific training, starting with mini-soccer festivals. Referee candidates from other neighbouring County FAs need to contact their own Referee Development Officer for details of referee courses in their own area.

Scott Taylor, Cumberland FA Referee Development Officer, said: “Once again this summer we have four planned Cumberland FA referee courses and all currently have spaces available.

"We are aware of a shortage of adult referees in and around the Carlisle area so have specifically organised one again for ex-players like last season to hopefully train new adult refs that will support the higher age group youth games in the Carlisle Glass Longhorn Football Youth League.

"We are always after more adult referees to officiate our older youth age groups and support our open age leagues. Sadly, in the past we have had to cancel several referee courses due to low numbers as we needed a minimum of 12 but we have listened to recent course feedback and tweaked the current FA Referee Course to suit our needs in Cumberland.

"Our ref courses are now 1-day in duration with the main practical learning part linked to local youth league festivals. This is to gain the vital matchday experience of refereeing actual teams, dealing with coaches, and being aware of spectators.

"Working with our very supportive partner leagues to achieve this has enabled us to reduce the referee course fee for Season 24/25 down to £80 (a decrease of 38.5%).

"Anyone interested in becoming a referee must first take the free online FA Laws of the Game qualification (here) and have the appropriate level of FA Safeguarding education (here). Then they can book on one of our summer referee courses (here) and start their refereeing journey to the Premier League like our very own Anthony Backhouse (pictured).”
