Cumberland represented at inaugural Walking Football Cup

Workington St Joseph’s men's and women's teams played in the regional round in Sunderland

On Sunday, Workington St Joseph’s and Workington St Joseph’s Ladies represented Cumberland in the inaugural FA Walking Football Cup at the regional round in Sunderland.

With the growth in the walking football format, both in Cumberland and across the country, the brand-new competition provides an opportunity for teams wishing to play competitively.

The regional round in the North East, one of 6 across the country, is the qualifier for the National Finals due to be played in November at St George’s Park.

Workington St Joseph’s, who have been involved in Cumberland FA’s Walking Football programme since it began, faced eventual winners Newcastle Benfield, West Hartlepool, Scarborough Barons and Wakefield Athletico.

David Wise commented “We were honoured to represent Cumberland in the inaugural FA CUP regionals at Washington in the North East. What a great experience it was too! Unfortunately, the results didn’t match the experience but there’s plenty to learn from and take on board for future endeavours. Good luck to winners Newcastle Benfield who go through to the National Finals at St George’s Park in November.”

Following interest in the Over 35 Turn Up and Play sessions over the past 18 months, the Women’s Team began sessions in April and it has gone from strength to strength with weekly sessions enabling the team to enter numerous tournaments across the country.

Kate Smith, manager for the Women’s Team, stated: “It was a great experience and we became Regional Runners-up, losing 2-1 in the final to a very good passing team, (and a Player of the match goalkeeper performance).”

WHAT IS WALKING FOOTBALL?
