County Cup Caps Fine Season for Veterans

Cumberland FA's County Veterans Trophy Final was a second chance of silverware for both finalists.

With both teams having been crowned Coleridge Stores Cumbria Veterans Football League Champions in their respective divisions this season (Harraby Catholic Club Veterans FC winning the 1st Division with Hall Park Hotel Veterans FC collecting the trophy in the 2nd Division) the Final was a chance for one of the Club’s to do the ‘double’!

Once the formalities were completed the 2015 County Veterans Final sponsored by Maurice Bewley Electrical got underway. Carlisle based Harraby Catholic Club Veterans FC started the Final well, creating some half chances. Hall Park Hotel Veterans FC soon began to settle into the game and also had a couple of good efforts on goal with the Harraby keeper being equal to them.

With the Peers brothers Arthur and Graeme being prominent throughout the game it meant the Harraby midfield was well marshalled and with Swift, the best player on the pitch, Harraby dominated the possession. Harraby almost rued their lack of finishing on more than one occasion with Hall Park contesting every ball and having their own efforts on goal.

Harraby took the lead late in the first half through Casey who slotted home from close range after a shot from outside the box deflected in to his path; this gave Harraby a 1 - nil lead to take into the break.

The 2nd half was much the same as the 1st with very few chances created and although Harraby were playing the better football, Hall Park were certainly in the game and could have equalised, but the centre forward couldn’t get a good connection on the back post after a Mark Green free kick.

With all to play for, Harraby struck with Douglas netting the goal that sealed the result. Douglas looked a threat all game and after some nice link up play meant that he was on the end of a Swift pass to convert from 10 yards to give Harraby the Cup!

Cumberland FA would like to congratulate both teams for a terrific Final which was played in good spirit by two good teams and with real enthusiasm and a will to win.

Cumberland FA would also like to thank Penrith FC for hosting the game.

Fred Conway, Cumberland FA Chairman commented “The game was a credit to Veterans football with both teams trying to play the right way”.
