New Walking Football Competition to Launch in the New Year
Cumberland FA is pleased to announce details of its first-ever Walking Football competition, which launches in the New Year.
This will be a mixture of league fixture events, festival format and cup competitions.
Spread across three central AstroTurf venues - Harraby in Carlisle and Penrith RUFC and Lakes College in Workington - there will be a 50+ division and a 65+ division.
This is a monthly competition and centres are able to apply for £200 and equipment packs from the FA Mars Just Play scheme.
Running from January to October (every fourth Sunday of month), all events are 10am–12pm.
The cost is £20 per team entry into each event and entries are now open. These must be completed by 18 January 2019.

Ray Sempill, Cumberland FA Football Development Officer, said: “Walking Football is one of the fastest growing formats of football. It is exciting for us to be in a position to start a new competition format. We hope that this format offers something for everyone. The social aspect of these events is as important as the football, so we hope to create a great social structure for the teams to enter into.”
David Wise, of St Joseph's School, added: "We have been running Walking Football sessions at St Joseph's School in Workington for over two years and have seen it grow from very small numbers attending to a regular 20 in 2018.
“The sessions have given a fresh impetus to the lives of many ex-football players who thought they were no longer able to play the game anymore, either through injury and physical issues or just because they thought they were too old to play. The sessions have had a social impact too, giving people the chance to make new friends and renew acquaintances with people they played with years earlier.
We are really excited that there will be Cumberland FA league and cup events in 2019. So excited in fact that we have raised money to purchase our own kit and we really cannot wait for the first event in January. Walking Football has really transformed lives in Workington and we are really hopeful that this is only the beginning of a story that will run and run!"
