SAVE to Deliver Excellence in Safeguarding Event in Cumberland

Cumberland FA is pleased to be welcoming SAVE Association to the county on Tuesday 11 December for a safeguarding training event at the Kirkgate Centre between 6:30pm and 9:30pm.

Aimed at club welfare officers, club secretaries and the chairperson of every youth club and adult disability club in Cumberland, SAVE’s training will be delivered by ex-professional footballers who were subjected to abuse during their time in the game.

This will be an informative session, bringing to life the importance of safeguarding within the grassroots game. Speakers on the night will include Derek Bell, Paul Stewart and David White.

Cumberland FA’s Designated Safeguarding Officer, Gill Shields, said: “We are extremely lucky to have this company come to our CPD event to deliver to our clubs first-hand their knowledge on safeguarding. We, as practitioners, can preach safeguarding but the extra knowledge these gents have, as victims of abuse in football, will be impactful and thought-provoking. This really is a ‘must-attend’ session.

WHO ARE SAVE?

SAVE Association is primarily a survivor-led community founded and led by Ian Ackley, Derek Bell, Paul Stewart and David White, who were all victims of childhood sexual abuse in a football setting. They aim to affect positive change in safeguarding and victim-engagement through football.

Their approach is a collaborative one; always to seek to work alongside authorities and organisations to achieve best results for children, vulnerable adults and survivors.

SAVE believe that football, with its unrivalled income streams and popularity, is in a unique position to be able to constantly strive to achieve an exemplary standard in the protection of vulnerable people and the care of survivors of abuse.

Although the event is initially aimed at club welfare officers, secretaries and chairpersons, depending on the availability of places other volunteer club officials and coaches are welcome to attend.

Please email safeguarding@cumberlandfa.com if you’re unsure whether you should attend or not, or have any further queries.
