Marching to the title: St Josephs Blacks crowned League Champions!

Workington St Josephs Blacks finished 5 points clear of second place to win our 2023 Walking Football League

More than 100 players have taken part in the Cumberland FA Walking Football League during 2023, with the monthly events providing opportunities for teams to play in various competitions.

New for 2023, we were delighted to welcome Queen of the South to the League with Whitehaven AFC also getting involved in friendly fixtures across the year as the Walking Football group continues to develop.

Workington St Josephs Blacks were crowned League Champions following the final fixtures of the season recently. The league championship was decided following the monthly league programme which began in April. 13 wins from 24 games saw the Champions finish 5 points clear of runners up Gretna FC 2008.

During the final event of the season, teams got behind the Cumberland FA and British Heart Foundation partnership to raise awareness and funds for the vital research as well as share information about the free 15 minute RevivR course.

League Champions Workington St Josephs Blacks donated £30 to the fundraising efforts.

Donations can be made HERE and teams and Clubs across the County can join the 50 for 50 campaign – click for more details.

Photos from the final League fixture event can be viewed on our Facebook page HERE. Many thanks to Martin and Linda Perry for the photos.

CUP COMPETITIONS

The annual St Joseph’s Cup was played during the May fixture event, with Workington St Josephs Black’s lifting the trophy. Cumberland FA Walking Football League Chairman and Referee Nigel Goddard commented on the competition:

“Workington Blacks won, beating their club mates, the Blues in the Final. It was a good day, good football and great sportsmanship!”

The Walking Football League Cup took place in September with defending Champions Carlisle United FITC Blue winning the final on penalties against Gretna 2008, retaining the trophy they won in 2022!

Cumberland FA would also like to thank the Referees for their efforts over the season. For any match officials who may be interested in getting involved in the 2024 season, we will be hosting a Walking Football Referee course ahead of the new season which is due to being in March. Please get in touch with Development@CumberlandFA.com to show your interest.

Cumberland FA Football Development Officer Ray Sempill said: “We have had another great season in the Walking Football League. Going into the final league event there were 5 teams who could still win it, which shows the level of competition this season.

"I would like to say a huge thanks to the facilities for hosting these events and the pubs/clubs who welcomed us for the social element afterwards which is a big part of the league.

"We are actively looking for new players and teams to get involved in our fantastic league for next season, so please get in touch if you are interested.”
