New Guests Confirmed in The Refs Room

We're delighted to confirm the next 3 special guests into The Ref's Room!

The ‘Refs Room’ is a fortnightly virtual/online meeting which aims to provide referees with a relaxed, informal session that tries to replicate the atmosphere of the referees room, where referees meet to have a chat about and around football, at a time when this is missing from many people lives.

Following the success of the last few sessions Cumberland FA, supported by The Referees Association of Cumberland FA and West Cumbria are delighted to announce the upcoming calendar of guests entering the CFA Ref’s Room for the next series of fortnightly online Question and Answer sessions for registered referees aged 18 and over, referee coaches or referee mentors within the County.

Our Upcoming Guests

Dave Horlick – 24th June 2020 at 7pm

Next Wednesday (24th) we are joined by Dave Horlick.  Dave is the Referee Development Officer at Liverpool County FA but is also the Vice Chair of The FA Referee’s Committee and therefore has a direct oversight of the development of refereeing.

Dave took up refereeing and was soon officiating on the Northern Premier League and then onto the Football League, Premier League List and FIFA list as an Assistant Referee.  His career saw him officiate at the 1997 FA Cup Final, Community Shield (97), over 50 FIFA/UEFA matches and The Nelson Mandela Presidents match (South Africa v Holland in 1997).   Since retiring as well as an official Dave has taken on roles as a Football and Premier League observer and also fulfils a role for UEFA as a Referee Liaison.

Dave will be talking about his career to date, with stories from a wealth of experience within his multiple roles.  He will also be answering any questions that the groups referees may have for him.

Chris Foy – 8th July 2020 at 7pm

Ex-Premier League Referee, Chris Foy, will be our guest in the Refs Room on the 8th July.  Chris first refereed in 1983 and was promoted to the Football League in 1994 and then to the Premier League (as an assistant) in 1995 and then as a referee in 1996.  In 2002 he became a FIFA listed referee.

During the 570 game professional career he has acted as fourth official for two England friendly Internationals and as referee for the The FA Trophy Final (2007), Football League Cup Final (2009), The Community Shield (2009) and The FA Cup Final (2010).

CFA Referees will be able to ask question directly to Chris during what will be an informative and entering 60 minute session.

Peter Bankes – 22nd July 2020 at 7pm

Finally, for now, we are joined by Select Group 1 Referee Peter Bankes who is currently within his first season within the Premier League.

This is the pinnacle of a career which started at 14 years of age in 1996.  By 2014 he had made the EFL’s Referees List as a Select Group Assistant Referee, officiating in an FA Cup and League Cup Semi Finals and National League Play Off Final, during this time.

He took charge of his first Championship game during the 2014/15 season and took charge of two Play Off Semi Finals in League One and Two, as well as being fourth official for an FA Vase Final.

He has also received high praise from former referees Keith Hackett and Jeff Winter, which is impressive enough, for his control of some challenging games.

Peter has held position as a Coach and Mentor within a County FA so will bring a great deal of empathy and experience to those referees who also hold those positions with Cumberland and will be able to give us a really interesting perspective on refereeing within the Premier League as part of project re-start.
