Since the 2015 Women’s ‘Summer’ Pilot League, teams playing local league football in the county have already doubled, with TEN teams kicking off the season. Five started the league back in 2015.
As a result of changes to the structure, and to support the on-going development of the league, which is run from Cumberland FA’s county offices with volunteers making up the committee; the Women’s League will now be known as Cumberland FA Women’s League. The league will stull offer playing opportunities to all areas of Cumbria; however, the change in name shows the level of support Cumberland FA have and continue to provide women’s football in the county.
The 2017 season of the Cumberland FA Women’s League kicked off with a pre-season festival at the end of March, with league fixtures commencing on Wednesday 5 April.
Craig Lewis, Football Development Manager at Cumberland FA, said: “Developing the female game in the county is one of the top priorities for the Cumberland FA. We have already seen the growth of teams playing youth football and we are delighted to see the growth of the women’s game, as well as welcoming and giving teams from the south of the county the opportunity to benefit from a fit-for-purpose structure. The adult female game is now in a stronger position due to the amount of options available to players throughout the year. Cumberland FA takes pride in being able to administer the summer league, and we look forward to working with the teams to ensure a positive and enjoyable environment is created for all to enjoy during 2017.”
The Cumberland FA Women’s League – a midweek 9-a-side league, has proved popular with women across the county who are perhaps unable to commit to weekend football. The midweek fixtures, played in a sociable (yet competitive) environment have meant that more women than ever are accessing the game in Cumbria. The game is not just for youngsters, with many coming back into the game or trying football for the first time.
Even though the teams are now playing their league fixtures until September, each team is always on the lookout for more players and welcome women (whatever their age over 16 or experience) to get involved in playing or supporting.

Carlisle-based team who have been champions of the previous two league titles and recipients of Nando’s vouchers to celebrate
Kendal Town FC
A new team, which will provide county playing opportunities in the South Lakes area
Keswick FC
The team played in the previous ‘winter’ women’s league and reformed for the midweek league
Islanders FC
The Barrow-based team pushed Crown Newlaithes FC close for the title last season in their first season
Penrith AFC Development
A member of the league since the move to the summer programme
Penrith AFC Diamonds
A new team primarily from the current Under-16 championship-winning team moving up to open-age football
Seaton LFC
Formally known as Yankees FC, the Workington-based team were formed for the 2015 season and have been growing ever since
