Football with a Fizz Returns to Cumberland

Following a successful pilot earlier this year, The University of Cumbria and UOC Active will be re-launching Prosecco Soccer on Friday 28 September as part of its Freshers package, providing new students and other local women with an opportunity to play football in a friendly, social environment.

Since Prosecco Soccer hit Cumberland in early 2017, the amount of women turning up for weekly kick-about sessions has regularly increased. Over the last year, we have seen over 40 women take part in the sessions - some as young as 18 right up to the age of 78.

An hour-long taster session at University of Cumbria, Fusehill Street, will take place between 6-7pm on Friday 28 September, before weekly kick-abouts begin on Thursdays between 4-5pm in the UOC Sports Hall from 4 October onwards. An invite to the on-site student bar - Calva Bar - will follow at 5pm for a glass of Prosecco or a soft drink.

The sessions at University of Cumbria and UOC Active will remain open for community users and local women who just fancy a kick-about, whilst also fitting in nicely with the University’s timetable, which will enable students to access the sessions too.

Jess Nelson, Cumberland FA Football Development Officer, said: “We’re really looking forward to the re-launch at the University in the next couple of weeks, welcoming brand-new first years and returning students to the fantastic sport packages on offer at UOC Active.

“We think Prosecco Soccer will not only add a female football element to its menu, but a fun, friendly and social activity for women to enjoy on campus and in the community.”

Those interested in coming along to the sessions can contact Jess on 07814559669 or email Jessica.Nelson@CumberlandFA.com, or get in touch with Andy at UOC Active directly via 01228 616329 (6329) or andy.keir@cumbria.ac.uk
